Male Hernia Signs and Symptoms
Hernia is any protrusion of the organ tissues through the abdominal wall. It occurs due to the straining of the body caused by lifting something very heavy, sneezing or coughing very hard and in excess. Normally, a hernia is treatable, but it can reoccur most often. A doctor should be consulted immediately as a delay in getting treatment for the hernia can be deadly. Both male and female alike are affected by hernia, but male suffer from it more. The symptoms of a hernia are also almost the same in both genders.
The most common symptom of hernia in male is the acute, sharp pain on the groin area. This pain can also occur in the lower abdominal area. The level of pain can also vary from a sharp, stabbing pain to a dull ache. Nonetheless immediate medical help should be taken in case of occurrence of any pain around the groin or the abdomen.
The symptoms of hernia in male are mainly the protrusions on the groin. Having nausea and vomiting are other symptoms of hernia. Experiencing difficulty with bowel movements and constipation also indicate the presence of hernia, because the bulge causes the intestines to get blocked.
The male patient of hernia experiences issues such as sexual dysfunction. Due to the blockage of blood flow to the tissues, the area does not get its supply of blood causing the male patient to have problems in ejaculation and erection. A problem in urinary functions is also seen in the male hernia patients, because hernia puts pressure on the bladder or the urethra causing the urination process to be difficult. Sometimes the patient finds it difficult to even pass the urine. The area around the urethra may also swell up and the patient feels a burning sensation when he urinates.
Abdominal Hernia Signs and Symptoms
Abdominal hernia occurs when a part of the intestine protrudes through a weak part of the lower abdomen. This hernia usually occurs around the groin, the belly button, the abdomen and possibly where a previous surgery has been done. It is either present from birth or might form after the patient has suffered from persistent coughing, or had put pressure due to heavy lifting, or had strained during a bowel movement. Abdominal hernia might also occur as a result of obesity, excessive weight loss, old age or pregnancy.
It is very painful and if not treated soon, abdominal hernia can cause complications. Usually it is treated surgically. The patient can feel the hernia and will be able to push it back into place himself, but he won’t be able to do it always. Abdominal hernia is more common in males than in females. Children show symptoms of abdominal hernia while they are crying, coughing, or passing stools. In adults, there may be a bulge present on either sides of the pubic bone. Moreover, they may feel that their lower abdomen is heavy. They may experience pain while coughing, bending over or lifting heavy things or straining during bowel movements. The pain might be dull or sharp, constant or periodically occurring.
The patient will feel that the pain increase with the physical activity. A swelling in the scrotum or testicles might be seen in the male patients. The patient might feel a burning sensation in the affected area and might also have tenderness too. The abdominal hernia is treated either through making an incision in the groin region and pushing back the intestines into the abdominal area; or by patching up the weakened area with a synthetic mesh. This mesh can be placed either by making an incision over the hernia or through the laparoscopic method.
